ALBANIAN ASSOCIATION OF PERINATOLOGY (AAP)

The Albanian Association of Perinatology (AAP), was founded on May 1997, at the issue of a group of physicians of the Maternity of Tirana. Most part of the members is obstetricians and perinatologists, but there are also midwives, GP, pharmacists, social workers, etc. The AAP is affiliated to the IAMANEH (International Association for Maternal and Neonatal Health) since 1997.

The activities of AAP, are concentrated on Women and Child Health programs in different Districts of Albania. Thanks to an increasing support of the Ministry of Health and World Association of Tirana University, as well as some benefactors, AAP has organised several education programs, on a variety of topics in the Reproductive health area.

Activity Report

• AAP have organised several International Meetings in Albania, about different topics of Reproductive Health
  
  
• Conducting the National program of Safe Motherhood with UNICEF. 1998-present
  
  
• Publishing two volumes of Reproductive Health Manual (more than 800 pg) in collaboration with WHO, UNFPA and University of Geneva, which has been evaluated very helpful for all the Albanian staff involved in this area. 2001
  
  
• Preparing a model Centre of RH Consulting, at the University Hospital for Obstetrics & Gynaecology of Tirana. Services for: antenatal counselling, prevention of termination of unwanted pregnancies, family planning, problems of adolescence, problems of menopause, infertility problems, social counselling, etc are provided at this Centre 1997.
  
  
• AAP has been in charge to follow-up a project of the EU (ECHO Program), as counsellor in three Maternity’s and 11 health Centres in Albania, including here the training of doctors and midwives of 6 Districts.
  
  
• We have organised with WHO, on December 1999, a Workshop about the safe use of blood.
  
  
• We have organised also, with the support of Soros Foundation and the Faculty of Medicine, 3 national seminars about the primary health care for mother and child.
  
  
• 14 doctors, members of AAP, had followed the Post-Graduate Course for Training in Reproductive Medicine and Reproductive Biology at the University Hospital of Geneva.
  
  
• We have published several RH books about “Breast Feeding”, “Nutrition of the Mother During Pregnancy and the Child during the First Year of Life”, “Postpartum Bleeding”, “Infection after birth-puerperal sepsis”, “Dystocia during labour”, “Abortion and its Risks”, “Manual for Pregnant Women and New-born”, “Kangaroo Mother Care”, “The use and misuse of technology in Mother and New-born Sector”, etc……….
  
  
• We have organised on November 1999, with The Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine, a Meeting about the problems and experiences of our Perinatal Systems, on Bari – Italy.
  
  
• We have prepared for the first time in Albania, with the support of UNICEF, “The Perinatal Chekbook”, for the follow up of pregnancies.
  
  
• We have conducted the training program for our midwives not only by our medical staff, but also by the experience of midwives from Geneva, England and Italy, which has been invited to work in our hospital, together with our teams.
  
  
• We have organised several Meeting and Conferences in Tirana and Kosovo, about prenatal problems, menopause, infertility and ultrasonography.
  
  
• We have organized June 2007 I International Conferences of Perinatal Medicine and on almost every year april 2008 Ian Donald School (I advanced course of ultrasound in obstetric and gynecology).
